About
Lisa Beard is a photographer, teacher, writer, and curator based in the Chicago area. She received her MFA in Media Arts from Maine Media College (2022). She entered into photography with an interest in researching and visually documenting forgotten places, and that early work culminated in two books: Abandoned Illinois: Secrets Behind the Spaces and Abandoned Illinois: Forgotten Places and Lost Histories. Since, Lisa’s work has evolved into a conceptual and experimental practice that often involves creating photo-based processes developed specifically for each project in an attempt to bring form and subject-matter into relation. Her work touches on the constant fluctuation of truth, memory, and reality through a lens of what insists through layers of time for us both individually and collectively. Lisa’s work has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions in venues such as Saint Xavier University, Chicago; SpacePlace Gallery and the Nizhniy Tagil State Museum of Fine Arts in Ural, Russia; The Center for Fine Art Photography; Troy University’s Huo Bar Zhu Gallery; The SE Center for Photography and has been included in publications from the International Center of Photography, Lenscratch, The Hand Magazine, and Broad Magazine. Lisa was named a Klompching Fresh 2024 Finalist and also a Photolucida Critical Mass Top 200 Finalist in 2024.
